SUNSET BEACH, NC (WECT) - Sunset Beach will soon have a brand new bridge, but many residents are focused on saving the old one.
The Old Sunset Beach Bridge Preservation Society formed recently to save the pontoon bridge, which some residents are calling "the little bridge that could."
Members of the Society voiced their desire to save and preserve the bridge at Sunset Beach's latest town council meeting earlier this week, and asked town officials to make a place for the bridge on a five-acre plot of land on the Intracoastal Waterway, only yards away from where the bridge is currently located.
"The bridge is associated with Sunset Beach," said Ann Bokelman. "You can't say or think of one without the other."
The Preservation Society has collected more than 4,500 signatures from residents and visitors who want to see the old bridge preserved.
