CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - It was April 1st of this year.  The news WBTV meteorologist Kelly Franson's doctor was giving her was not a joke.

"It was April Fool's Day when I was diagnosed with a brain tumor," Franson said.

Doctors told her it was something called a meningioma. It's a type of tumor that typically forms on the protective lining of the brain.  Most of the time it is not cancer.  The tumors can be small and not give a person any problems at all, or they can grow and cause numbness in the limbs, seizures, or worse.

"I talked to a lot of doctors and there were many opinions but I asked if this is going to have to come out eventually, why don't we take it out now," she said.

Kelly chose to have her surgery in Durham, at Duke, and just one week after the tumor was successfully removed, she was home in Charlotte.

"It was not cancer, which was a concern because I had been diagnosed with that before," she said.

Kelly battled thyroid cancer ten years ago and beat it.

For four weeks now she's been surrounded by family and friends.  She has received many cards, emails, and well-wishes from WBTV viewers.

"There have been a  lot of very nice cards and emails and very nice dinners everyone at work has been cooking for me.  I miss all of you guys," Franson said.

Now Kelly is less than a few weeks away from returning to work.

"I'm excited to get back to work and hopefully get to a point where I don't feel like I need to take a nap in the middle of the day," she said.
