GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A tanker truck loaded with gasoline overturned in Gaston County Monday morning after another driver pulled out into the path of the truck.
The tanker truck was traveling in the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 321 when it flipped over at 9:28 a.m.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the driver of the tanker truck will not be charged in the accident.
A state trooper said another vehicle pulled out from a side road in front of the tanker truck causing the tanker to drive to the left side of the road.
The tires of the tanker truck got stuck in the saturated grassy median which caused it to overturn, a trooper said.
During clean-up operation which lasted seven hours Monday, officials blocked off the north and southbound lanes of Highway 321 between Wolfpack Road and Robinson Road.
Multiple units responded to the scene including the Gastonia Fire Department's Hazardous Material Team.
The driver of tanker truck was not injured in the wreck according to Gaston Emergency Medical Services.
Firefighters worked several hours spraying the area with foam to contain the vapors, patching holes in the ruptured gas tank of the tanker truck, and flushing out the remaining fuel in the tank, an official said.
All lanes of U.S. Highway 321 were reopened by 4:15 p.m.
