Suspect in Charlotte nightclub shooting arrested

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Police have arrested a man they said was involved in a shooting which occurred inside a Charlotte nightclub late Sunday night.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) arrested and charged 45-year-old Rodney Bowens Wednesday morning with possession of a firearm by felon, communicating threats and assault by pointing a gun.  Bowens is being held at the Mecklenburg County jail.

Three people were injured during the shooting at the Get-A-Way Lounge located at 9305 Wilkinson Boulevard around 10:40 p.m.

Witnesses told police there was an argument inside the lounge and that two people left the club and later returned with a weapon. 

Roosevelt Hinton was assaulted with a weapon but he was not injured.  The CMPD said he returned fired in self defense and wounded one of the suspects in which police identified as Mark Bowens.  Police said Hinton would not face charges in connection with the shooting.

Bowens was wounded in the head and abdomen.  At last check, he was still listed in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center. 

Once he is released from the hospital, Bowens will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injuries, possession of a firearm by felon, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, assault with a deadly weapon, and assault by pointing a gun.

An employee and a club patron were also injured during the exchange of gunfire Sunday night.

Phillip Miller was shot in the thigh.  He was treated and released at the hospital. 

William Boyd was shot in the thigh and suffered a shattered femur.  At last check, Boyd was still hospitalized at Carolinas Medical Center.
