CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A local high school student fed the hungry this Thanksgiving in a nontraditional way.
Turkey, dressing, and the fixings are the effort of Kyerra Hines a senior at Providence Day School.
"It's just really good to do something for someone,"Hines said.
She enlisted the help of loving and caring relatives, but also managed to get the backing of an agency that knows need on a daily basis.
Her mother Shemal Hines contacted one local service group.
"We worked with Second Harvest Food Bank to identify individuals in the community who could use a nice hot thanksgiving meal," she said.
That meant Kyerra's aunt Delores had to use a familiar skill.
She runs the families restaurant business.
Delores Miller said, "We had 11 turkeys. We baked nine, and we fried two."
That doesn't include the extra ingredients for a complete dinner, but serving it up involved a rather unique concept.
The goal was to come up with enough food for 125 meals and raise more than 500 dollars. On this Thanksgiving in Charlotte some of the cities needy that's being fed through face book.
She started the online fund raising appeals back in September, and the donations have turned into a powerful payoff day for those on the giving and receiving end.
Mar-iesha Harris was among those who turned out for the event, and found a valuable lesson.
Harris said, "I've learned to be grateful and thankful for what you get.
It's a holiday example of connecting high tech and personal touch.
"It's good to know that you've made a difference in someone's life in a positive way," Hines said.
