CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Police have charged two men with murder after a shooting left a teen dead in Charlotte's University City area late Thursday night.
According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Jonathan Ray Nelson, 18, was shot at 1620 Arlyn Circle around 11:30 pm.
The incident happened just as a CMPD officer, who was working off duty as a security officer at an apartment complex on Arlyn Circle, heard what sounded like breaking glass.
He thought someone was breaking into a car and spotted a dark-colored vehicle leaving the scene, police said. He immediately called for back up from CMPD officers in the area and they started looking for the suspects' vehicle.
A few minutes later, CMPD officers spotted the vehicle on University City Boulevard and stopped it.
Around 11:45 p.m., Nelson showed up at Carolinas Medical Center-Univeristy suffering from a gunshot wound. He was driven to the hospital by his cousin who told CMPD officers they were sitting in a car in a nearby apartment complex and were approached by two men whose faces were covered with ski masks. Nelson later died at the hospital.
Police were told the suspects attempted to rob Nelson and his cousin. During the robbery, one of the suspects fired a handgun which struck Nelson. A firearm was recovered near the scene of the shooting.
The two men who were in the car in which officers stopped were Jerry Fewell, 29, and Tahashi Tarine Matthews, 33. Both have been charged with murder and two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon. They are being held at the Mecklenburg County jail.
