CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -  Understanding the need the for building bridges and healing wounds, members of Charlotte's Islamic community sat down face to face with U.S. representative Sue Myrick.

Jabrill Hough is the spokesperson for the Islamic Center of Charlotte.

"I think we both want a safe community. We want a moral community. We want a lot of the same things," he said.

Myrick's words regarding the role of Islam and Muslims in military following violence at Fort Hood, Texas, created large divide with local followers of the faith.

She makes a unique distinction between followers of the Muslim faith.

Myrick met with behind closed doors to bring clarity to the issue.

"Radical Islamic extremist…Radical Islamic ideology those are the terms I use and that's not what they represent," Myrick said in describing those she spoke with.

Even after the conversation, Islamic leaders still feel slighted by the tone, but welcome future discussions according to Hough.

He said, "Representative Myrick has committed to come into our community, and with a larger group like a town meeting setting."

It is an opportunity to set the record straight on both sides.

"We literally going to get together and start a dialogue, and have a discussion in the community. It needs to happen all across America, Myrick said.

Both sides are hoping that their issues can be resolved in a town hall meeting.
