Cupcake craze hits new heights

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - If you think the cupcake craze of the past few years has died down, think again.

Two new businesses have opened this month which focus solely on cupcakes.  Their owners are certain they'll do big business, just based on the success they've had in the past few weeks.

"I think Charlotte was ready for us," said Tara Voigt, owner of SAS Cupcakes in South Charlotte.

The Blakeney "cupcakery" is decked out in pink with a tempting display of a dozen uniquely flavored cupcakes.  Some of the flavors change every day.

"It's the convenience factor.  You're getting your own individual cake, whatever flavor you want, and we're making it for you," Voigt said.

Convenience is Angie Lucas's main goal.  What makes her cupcake business unique is that it's a delivery only experience.  She asks customers to go to her website, choose their flavor combinations, and she'll deliver them. 

"There's a good market for cupcakes in Charlotte," Lucas said.  She's made at least a dozen sales in only a few weeks of business.

At SAS there are some days the line of anxious customers trails out the door.

The going rate for a dozen cupcakes from speciality shops runs in the $30 range.
