Mecklenburg Co. not offering H1N1 vaccine to the public, for now

Posted: Updated:

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Health officials in Raleigh had to turn people away after running out of the H1N1 vaccine Monday morning, but officials in Mecklenburg County say they are holding off on offering the vaccine to the public until they have an ample supply.

According to WRAL.com, thousands of people showed up at clinics in Wake County Monday morning to receive the H1N1 vaccine.

According to Mecklenburg County Health Department Spokesman Rick Christenbury, the county received about 3,000 doses last week.

Most of those vaccines, however, have gone to the two hospital systems in the Charlotte area and were designated for staff members who have frequent patient contact, Christenbury said.

Some of the vaccines will also be used to vaccinate health department workers who did not take the nasal vaccines that were available in recent weeks.

"We are hoping to have enough [H1N1 vaccine] in the next couple of weeks to begin taking appointments for the H1N1 shot," Christenbury said.  "We are also working with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools to plan some school-based clinics."

The Mecklenburg County Health Department does not plan to offer these vaccinations to the public until they have sufficient supply on hand.

"We don't want to have to turn people away," Christenbury said.

IREDELL COUNTY:  The Health Department will be giving both the seasonal flu vaccine and the H1N1 vaccine at the flu clinics and it is safe to take both vaccines on the same day.  The dates, times and locations of these clinics are:
