
CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -- A group in Charlotte handing out flyers to stop a jail expansion in Mecklenburg County.
The project is supposed to break ground next year..and cost tax payers 240-million dollars.
Urban Ministries says a bigger jail, won't help, but instead compounds the problem.
They say about 75-percent of those in jail are mentally ill and need to be treated...
Sheriff Chipp Bailey says only about 20-percent of the prison population is believed to have mental health issues.
County Commissioners will discuss the expansion plan at their meeting Tuesday night.
