Thousands take part in Komen Charlotte Race For The Cure

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - More than 14,000 people were out on the streets of uptown Charlotte early Saturday morning to help raise awareness and money for breast cancer research.

This weekend was the kickoff of the 13th Annual Susan G. Komen Charlotte Race for the Cure.

Racers joined together for the unique 5K walk/run that brings thousands of participants and volunteers together with one common goal, to help eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.

The event celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.  On Race day, signs are provided "in memory of" or "in honor of" loved ones for participants to pin on their backs.  It is a personal way for individuals to share their stories with others around them.

WBTV's Trent Faris and Molly Grantham were out at the event, with teams to honor their family members.  Molly was joined by Carolina Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams, to countdown the start of the race, live on WBTV News Saturday morning.

The Race for the Cure participants raised more than $1.3 million dollars, and counting, for this year's race.
