CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Today is Charlotte's 2009 primary for municipal elections.

Three Republicans are vying to be the party nominee for mayor of Charlotte since Mayor Pat McCrory is retiring after serving in the office for the last 14 years.

There are also 14 candidates running for City Council At-Large.

So far, turnout for early voting was very low.  Just 677 people cast ballots during early voting. That's 0.2% of the 466,370 registered voters. As a comparison, 2,377 people voted early in 2005.

This is not exactly a snoozer election. Mayor Pat McCrory is stepping down. There are three Republicans vying for the top of the Republican ticket. They are city council member John Lassiter, Jack Stratton and Martin Davis. Democrat Anthony Foxx is not facing a Democrat rival to run as mayor.

There are seven Republicans and seven Democrats vying to fill the four at-large seats on city council. Each party will select four candidates to run in the general election on Nov. 3rd.

There are three city council district races with a primary. They are districts one, two and five. There is not a Republican candidate in those races, so today's winner will take the seat.
