CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - If you love gardening, you know a big pile of dirt is just about the best possible gift. Today a pile of great soil, 17 cubic feet of it, was delivered free to this area's meals on wheels program, Friendship Trays.
Wallace Farms in Huntersville wanted to help launch a new effort to bring locally-grown fruits and vegetables to the hungry and teach our underemployed neighbors new skills.
This is Friendship Trays' first-ever "Friendship Garden"... And it's just beginning to take shape with raised beds and some donated pepper plants from Renfro Hardware in Matthews.
Friendship Trays Executive Director Lucy Bush Carter says it's all about bringing nature's freshest, tastiest, healthiest to the people the agency serves. And you can help, "Now we just need some volunteers that are willing to get their hands dirty, get busy, fill the beds with dirt and plants and start growing."
Eventually, they would like to grow zucchini, squash, tomatoes, onions and more.
