CONCORD, NC (WBTV) - Water restrictions put into place in the past to help Concord deal with the drought were made permanent during Thursday's city council meeting, even though the drought is over.
City leaders say most residents got used to the idea of the three-day per week lawn watering schedule and don't mind sticking with it.
Concord and Cabarrus County don't have rivers like the Yadkin or Catawba from which to draw water. The Rocky River isn't suitable to produce water for the reservoirs.
"We do not have a major river flowing through Cabarrus County," said Concord City Manager Brian Hiatt. "We're restricted in terms of how much water supply we have, so we have been very aggressive over the years in trying to conserve water."
The summer months are typically the times when water usage peaks, and much of that is due to lawn irrigation.
Under the current restrictions, Concord residents may water their lawns on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
In the event of a drought the restrictions may be changed to higher levels.
"When you've got a finite resource you've got to conserve," said Hiatt.
