CHARLOTTE, NC - Hendrick Construction, Inc. has successfully completed the 81,000-square-foot Mecklenburg County Jail-North Annex, and the sheriff's office is planning to open the new facility in April.

The annex can hold up to 250 inmates in 36,000 square feet of space, and it features 10,000 square feet of administrative space. An additional 35,000-square-foot dormitory will be up-fitted at a later time.

"The new jail annex alleviates the overcrowding problem we recently experienced," said Sheriff Chipp Bailey. "By opening this facility, we can get back to a more realistic officer- to- inmate ratio and enhance officer safety."

The facility will primarily house low- to medium-security inmates. The annex includes three "sprung" structures featuring architectural membrane panels under high tension that create a semi-permanent facility resembling a tent.

"This was a challenging project that we were able to build in a relatively short amount of time due to its innovative design," said Roger Hendrick, president of Hendrick Construction. "We're pleased to deliver this much-needed annex facility to the sheriff's office on schedule."
