Pilot dies in Union County helicopter crash

MONROE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say a pilot is dead but a passenger has survived a helicopter crash in southern North Carolina.

City of Monroe spokesman Pete Hovanec says 46-year-old Mark Bartlett of Mint Hill died in the accident. He says the helicopter clipped a power line but it wasn't immediately clear if the helicopter was already on its way down.

Hovanec said a second man, Justin Travis, was taken to a nearby hospital and was awake and conscious. Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says Bartlett was the pilot and that the OH-6A helicopter crashed at 10:35 a.m.

Monroe resident Katrina Sturgis says she heard an explosion that jarred her home before seeing a cloud of smoke rise from the field across the street.
