Ski resorts preparing for the winter season

Posted: Updated:

BEECH MOUNTAIN, NC (WBTV) - In the North Carolina mountains, as the snow goes, so goes the economy.

Tuesday's blast of white stuff and continued cold temperatures have folks thinking of good times that may be around the corner up there.

Fun on the slopes means a bit of financial security for many who live and work in the mountains.

When the weather remains consistently cold, they can make snow and keep the slopes covered with the white stuff.

On Wednesday, Megan LaJare hiked up to the administration office at the Ski Beech Resort looking for work.

"I need a second job to help support me through this economy," she said.

Ski Beech will hire about 400 people this winter.

At the bottom of the slopes, businesses in town also want some of the tourists' money.

Many are hoping Tuesday's snowfall is a good sign for the winter.

While no one is skiing yet, the slopes could open by the middle of next month.

WBTV's Steve Ohnesorge has more details in this report.
