A wreck in Huntersville claimed the life of a teen and critically injured another Tuesday night.

The wreck happened on Kerns Road off Mount Holly-Huntersville Road around 7:34 p.m.

According to the Huntersville Police, witnesses said two vehicles were traveling north on the road at a high rate of speed.

Tad Allen Daugherty of Cornelius was driving a 1998 Toyota 4 Runner.  Police say he crossed the center line and swerved back to the right.  He ran off the road and rolled over.

Both Daugherty and his passenger, Daniel Hyde Latimer of Huntersville, were ejected from the vehicle.

Daugherty died at the scene.  Latimer was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center.  As of Wednesday afternoon, he was listed in critical condition.

Police said alcoholic beverages were located in the vehicle at the scene, but they are not certain if the driver or passenger had consumed alcohol prior to the crash.

Daugherty and Latimer were recent graduates of Hopewell High School in Huntersville.
