SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Panthers offensive lineman Travelle Wharton officially announced his retirement at a news conference at Wofford College, about 30 minutes from he grew up and started playing the game. Wharton played in 115 games and started 111 for Carolina.

They aren't eligible to return until the opener for the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, Sept. 14 at Chicago.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The Carolina Hurricanes say captain Eric Staal has had surgery to repair a core muscle injury and should be ready for training camp. General manager Ron Francis said the surgery was performed Tuesday by a doctor in Philadelphia.
