GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) - Gaston County's largest employer is striking a deal with American military veterans who complained that a name change indicated people are forgetting the sacrifice of World War II vets. Administrators of the recently renamed CaroMont Regional Medical Center are compromising with local veterans and promising to build a new veterans monument in a prominent place on the medical campus.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - AAA Carolinas thinks a few more North Carolina motorists will be on the road for the Memorial Day weekend. The Charlotte-based motor club estimates that 897,300 motorists are expected to hit the road beginning today.

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) - With warmer weather here, a repaving project is resuming in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The work will include a 6.1-mile section of U.S. 441, also called Newfound Gap Road.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Senate Republicans are about ready to hand off their North Carolina state budget proposal to their counterparts in the House. The Senate scheduled for Thursday the second and final vote on its plan to spend roughly $21 billion in each of the next two years.
