CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The mother of a little boy who was nearly kidnapped in a public park in uptown Charlotte Sunday evening says she is relieved the alleged suspect is now behind bars.
"I've been very pleased with the police and what they've done," said Camilla McCall, the child's mother.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department charged 41-year-old Jerry White with Abduction of Children, and Assault of a Child Under 12 Wednesday afternoon. Officials say this is White's 103rd arrest in Mecklenburg County.
White was located by officers after warrants were signed. He was apprehended without incident, police said.
Police say most of White's prior charges are for non-violent offenses, but he has been charged with assault on a child before. Police say they are still reviewing his record.
"That is crazy that he is still walking around here in our neighborhood and he's been arrested that many times," said McCall.
McCall took her son to Frazier Park on West Fourth Street Sunday evening. Her son was riding his bike and she was by his side when the incident happened.
Around 6:45 p.m., McCall told police a man walked past them, he turned around, and grabbed her son around the waist.
"He just snatched him around the waist, off the bike and that's when I jumped on, and grabbed Liam and that's when we were fighting about him," McCall recalled.
Police said she grabbed White and wrestled him to the ground.
"The only thing I could think of is, I've got to hold on to him as tight as I can," McCall said.
She was able to get her son away from White, who then got up and started walking down the sidewalk into the park. She said the man smelled of alcohol.
Before leaving, police said White dropped a Bojangle's box which included a receipt. The CMPD crime lab took the meal box hoping to obtain fingerprints.
The receipt indicated the food was purchased at the Bojangle's at 1402 West Trade Street which is located less than a mile away from the park.
Police were able to obtain surveillance images taken inside the restaurant at the time the food was purchased which showed White.
After these images were released to the media on Tuesday, people starting calling police with tips identifying the suspect.
