WADESBORO, NC (WBTV) – A little girl was accidentally shot and killed by her brother at their home in Anson County Friday night.

The shooting occurred on Sandy Ridge Church Road which is located in the southern part of the county.

According to the Anson County Sheriff's Office, 11-year-old Destiny Moya Carelock was accidentally shot in the face by her 10-year-old brother.

Their 16-year-old sister was also home at the time, but there was no adult supervision when the shooting occurred, officials said.

"Nobody ever going to take my sister's spot," said Brooklyn Smith. "There were three and now there are two," she said.

The weapon was a .22-caliber rifle that was stored in a closet. Investigators believe Carelock's brother got the gun and accidentally fired it. She was struck just below the eye.

"This appears to be a terrible accident," said Sheriff Tommy Allen. "This is something that should never have happened, but then it does. We preach over and over that guns must be stored in a safe place, where inquisitive children cannot get to them."

Destiny's mother, Maketta Willoughby said she wishes they had the gun secured. She never wants another family to deal with what they're going through now.

She said the children were always told never to touch a gun.

Investigators have consulted with the Anson County District Attorney but, so far, no decision has been made as to whether charges will be filed against the owner of the weapon.
