MORGANTON, NC (WBTV) – A woman is in custody and a man is being sought after they led authorities on a high-speed chase down Interstate 40 in Morganton Monday morning.

The owner of the car called police after he spotted the vehicle pulling out of a trailer park.

Rex Chapman said the car was stolen a week ago and he had been looking for it ever since.  "My dad followed them this morning and called me and I identified my car so we started chasing them and that's when we called police."

Police began chasing the car as it turned onto Interstate 40 at Burkemont Avenue.

After reaching speeds of 95 miles per hour the car pulled over into the median near mile marker 102 and stopped. The driver jumped out and ran across the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 and disappeared into the woods.

Several police officers, armed with rifles, followed on foot but could not find the man.

He has been identified as Aaron Webb.

The woman who was in the car with him was taken into custody. Her name was not released but authorities said drug charges were pending against her.

Police said they will continue looking for Webb and ask anyone who may know where he is to contact Morganton Public safety.

Some landowners believe the problem stems from the fact that Lincoln County does not have a stormwater ordinance, which is why they say they've seen an overflow of runoff water since the start of this development.
