Roofing company CEO charged with swindling homeowners

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The CEO of a roofing company that has hundreds of complaints in the Carolinas filed against it was arrested in Georgia Tuesday.

Carlton DeWayne Dunko turned himself into the Bibb County Sheriff's Office. Dunko was released from jail seven hours later after posting a $64,800 bond.

According to the Better Business Bureau, there have been nearly 300 homeowners in N.C. and S.C. who have filed complaints against the company, which was featured as one of the "Dirty Dozen" companies by the BBB.

The total loss to these homeowners is estimated at $2 million, BBB spokesperson Janet Hart said.

George Bostick, in south Charlotte, said he was elated to hear about Dunko's arrest. Bostick employed American Shingle last year and never got the roof he was promised.

"I just don't understand how someone like that can lay down and sleep at night," Bostick says. Investigators from 11 states say American Shingle swindled homeowners like Bostick by taking their insurance money for a hail damaged roof and running.

Bostick paid $7,000 out of his own pocket for his new roof, after his insurance company took a hit on the American Shingle contract.

Since American Shingle filed for bankruptcy, it's unlikely Bostick will ever see a dime.

Now the concern is copycats, according the Charlotte BBB.

American Shingle was in and out of Charlotte within a few months last year. It was one of 70 new roofing companies that just sprouted up. Typically, there might be seven.

The BBB said the company took money from homeowners without doing roof work, and the company had 11 unanswered complaints filed with the BBB in one month in 2010.

The company closed its offices in 10 states in July, and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in September.  At the time, the company cited debts between $10 and $50 million.  Click here to read the BBB's report about American Shingle Company.
