CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Police say two gunmen were shot during a robbery at sandwich shop in northeast Charlotte Monday night.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department received several 911 calls around 6:58 p.m. concerning shots fired at the Subway shop at 602 West Sugar Creek Road in the Hidden Valley neighborhood.

Witnesses told CMPD that Jamal Steven McKenith, 20, and Demetrius Nathaniel Thomas, 19, entered the shop armed with handguns.  They demanded cash from a 48-year-old man who was working in the store.

According to the police report, the employee gave the suspects an undisclosed amount of cash.  As they were leaving, the employee fired his own weapon striking McKenith and Thomas, police said.

McKenith collapsed on the ground at the end of the strip mall.  Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Thomas was shot in the stomach and was driven to Carolinas Medical Center-University by Deonna Brown who was waiting outside in a nearby vehicle.  From there, Thomas was transferred by ambulance to CMC-Main where he underwent surgery.

Once he is released from the hospital, Thomas will be charged for conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Police have also charged Brown with conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Police say a third person was also in the car which took Thomas to the hospital.  That person, police say has not been charged with a crime.

Police are still trying to determine if any charges will be filed against the Subway employee who fired his weapon at the suspects.
