SHELBY, NC (WBTV) – No time to celebrate for the new sheriff-elect of Cleveland County. He just got fired by the old sheriff, who lost his the Democratic bid for re-election.

Alan Norman swept Raymond Hamrick, who got just two percent of the vote.

Now a temporary arrangement has them wearing a new badge for Gaston County. Cleveland and Gaston officials said since the firing Friday, they worked on a plan to keep the men employed so as not to lose their law enforcement certification and benefits.

"I never imagined this..I guess things happened," Sheriff-elect Alan Norman said of the firing.

What happened is up for debate.

Current Cleveland County sheriff Raymond Hamrick says Norman and the others were fired for using county resources to interview employees for the new administration. Norman says he had permission from the sheriff to do so.

"He offered anything from the agency that I may need as far as the transition, even offered space at the law enforcement center," Norman said.

He'll take office December 6.

"We're moving forward in fact we continued to move forward after it was announced Friday afternoon," Norman said.

Norman says the three men that were fired along with him will have jobs under his administration. Cleveland county manager David Dear says the new assignments would come at no cost to Gaston County.
