Hometown: Kay Johnson grew up in Wilkesboro, North Carolina.
Education: She is a 2005 graduate of Elon University. (Go Phoenix!)
Family: Kay lives in Charlotte with her puppy, Toby. He is a Corgi/Terrier mix adopted from a shelter in Bluefield, West Virginia. Kay is also an aunt to two wonderful nephews who live with the rest of her immediate family in western North Carolina.
Career: Kay joined WBTV in September of 2010. She is a "one-man band" who shoots, writes and edits general assignment stories.
Prior to working in Charlotte, Kay was a weekend anchor and reporter at WDEF in Chattanooga, TN. She also spent time at WVVA in Bluefield, West Virginia.
Favorite Stories: In 2006, Kay covered the aftermath of the Sago Mine Disaster. She interviewed the widow of one of the miners who was fighting for better safety regulations and equipment in the mines. Kay also covered the first ever death penalty case in Chattanooga involving the murder of Atlanta restaurant owner Guy Luck.
Kay was also privileged to interview the parents of 9-year-old Jessie Starnes. They made the decision to donate her organs after her death. Seven people benefited from her donation.
Hobbies: Kay loves spending time with family, reading, hiking with Toby, taking road trips and a good game of tennis.
