POLKTON, NC (WBTV) - A man has been charged for firing a gun which injured a 7-year-old girl in Anson County Thursday morning.

The shooting happened around 10 a.m. at a home on Loop Ridge Place which is located off Highway 74 in Polkton.

On Friday, the sheriff's office said the victim's cousin, Elijah McBride, 20, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.  He is being held at the Anson County jail under a $25,000 bond.

According to Sheriff Tommy Allen, McBride was handling the gun "in a careless and even threatening manner prior to its discharge."

The sheriff also said McBride was uncooperative with detectives and "conveniently misplaced the gun after the shooting."

"It is just luck that we are not investigating a death," Allen said.

After the shooting on Thursday, someone placed the child in a van and headed to the hospital.  While enroute, the van ran out of gas on Salisbury Street in Wadesboro.  Another driver then took the child and her mother to Anson Community Hospital.

From there, the child was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.  She is expected to fully recover from her injuries.
