CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A student was shot in the leg outside an entrance to Johnson C. Smith University in west Charlotte early Monday morning.

The student suffered a non-life threatening injury during an apparent drive-by shooting which happened at the intersection of Campus Street and Beatties Ford Road around 3:17 a.m.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), the victim and several other people were on a party bus sponsored by Charlotte nightclub "Faces."

As the students were getting off the bus, a jeep drove up and opened fire injuring the female student.

The CMPD said the gunman was in a green-colored Jeep vehicle with a tire on the back.  There were two other males in the vehicle.

The CMPD said there was an altercation at the club which apparently led the suspects to follow the bus which drove to JCSU to drop off the students.

Police said the injured freshman was not a part of the altercation at the club.  She has been treated and released from the hospital.

"I have repeatedly expressed to our students that they should not board club sponsored buses as the organizers do not have their best interests at heart," said Johnson C. Smith University President Dr. Donald L. Carter.  "I hope that this incident will remind out students to always keep their personal safety at the forefront of their minds."
