Hickory postal center on list of cuts?

Posted: Updated:

HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - The U.S. Postal Service processing and distribution center is under consideration to be cut as part of a program by the entire postal service to save money.

More than 250 people are employed at the center. It's unclear how many affected because they could all be moved to other area facilities - such as places either in Charlotte or Greensboro.

The factor in this issue is that the US Postal Service says it won't lay anyone off, but employees don't believe that, Steve Ohnesorge reports.

The post office will reassign them to other facilities in "commuting distance," but won't offer what that distance is or tell what jobs they are, employees say.

Postal workers are skeptical about keeping their jobs in such a move and say that the move could cause a delay in mail delivery in the Hickory area by a day.

Employees and the Chamber of Commerce will fight the move and the Postal Service has not decided yet what to do.

Nothing will happen until a feasibility study is complete and no final decision will be made until there's a public hearing where you will get a chance to tell them how you feel.

Officials think it will be at least a few weeks before it gets to that point.
