CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina is getting a new passenger terminal to handle the growing cruise business out of Charleston.
More than 200 people gathered at the old terminal Thursday to learn that a master plan for a new terminal and the area around it on the Charleston waterfront should be ready in about four months.
State Ports Authority president and CEO Jim Newsome says there's no budget or timetable just yet for the terminal. But the need is growing to replace the present terminal of cinderblock and brick that is almost 40 years old.
Beginning next spring, Carnival Cruise Lines is permanently basing a ship in Charleston. The vessel will sail year-round, meaning millions for the local and state economies.
