WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina's junior U.S. senator wants to co-sponsor a bill to give Department of Veterans Affairs health care to those exposed to contaminated water at the Marines' Camp Lejeune.
Sen. Richard Burr introduced the "Caring for Camp Lejeune Veterans Act of 2009" Tuesday. Sen. Kay Hagan said in a statement Wednesday that she will also push for a Senate hearing on the issue. She is a member of the Armed Services Committee.
Officials estimate as many as 1 million people may have been exposed to water contaminated by dry cleaning solvents and chemicals.
