MONROE, NC (WBTV) - A accident on Highway 74 in Monroe snarled traffic in Union County for about three hours Tuesday afternoon.

The incident was caused by an asphalt recycling truck traveling westbound on Highway 74 (West Roosevelt Boulevard) around 12:30 pm.

The conveyor belt on top of the truck was not completely down officials say.  It snagged the bottom of the Skyway Drive Bridge which is over Highway 74.

When the truck hit the bridge, loose asphalt on the truck scattered onto the highway causing damage to at least three vehicles.  Officials estimate the damage to be approximately $3,000 to each vehicle involved.

Fortunately, no one was injured during the accident.

The driver of the asphalt recycling truck will be cited for failing to properly securing his load, officials say.

The westbound lanes of Highway 74 were blocked just prior to Skyway Drive, but police reopened both lanes by the middle of the afternoon.
