WILKESBORO, N.C. (AP) - Transportation officials say southbound lanes of a highway in western North Carolina will remain closed overnight so workers can stabilize a slope that collapsed in heavy rains.
The Winston-Salem Journal reported Friday that workers will drill steel rods into the slope at U.S. 421 to help compact the dirt. A huge sinkhole opened earlier this week after rain flooded a creek next to the highway.
The southbound lanes of the highway in Wilkesboro near Exit 286B will be closed from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. Saturday, when one lane will reopen.
Flooding washed away soil, collapsed a retaining wall and caused the 40-foot deep sinkhole.
Initial repair estimates are $500,000 for three to six weeks of work.
