5,000 pieces of mail damaged at post office facility in Charlotte

(The following is from the United States Postal Service.)

CHARLOTTE, NC - On Tuesday, May 5, a water pipe burst during mail processing operations at the Charlotte Processing and Distribution Center located on Scott Futrell Drive in Charlotte. The Charlotte plant collects and postmarks mail for the 280-282 and 297 ZIP code areas.

Of the more than 1 million pieces of mail processed last evening, approximately 5,000 sustained water damage. A very small number of pieces have been rendered illegible by the damage.  Every effort will be made to identify the mailer or recipient of the mail piece for delivery.  Customers will receive these pieces over the next two days and may notice some remaining dampness and discoloration.  There is no hazard to customers as the pipe was connected to a normal public water source.

Mid-Carolinas District Manager Dave Fields assures customers that all mail will be given the utmost of care, as we forward all mail to its destination.  "As this is the Mother's Day week, we apologize to any customer who receives a damaged greeting; however, our first priority was to affect delivery.  I would stress that the vast majority of customers served by this facility will see no disruption in the level of service they receive today."  All repairs have been made and the building was totally operational throughout the night.

Any questions or concerns should be directed to Mid-Carolinas Consumer Affairs Office at 704-424-4422.
