CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The Mecklenburg County Health Department will conduct tuberculosis skin tests on about 80 people at West Mecklenburg High School after an individual at the school was diagnosed with tuberculosis.
The health department made the announcement on Tuesday. Health officials said the person who has TB is currently being treated and is not in school.
Students and staff who have shared a classroom with the ill person will be given the TB skin test.
Those who have been in the same gym, hallway, cafeteria or other large space with this individual are not considered at risk for exposure to TB.
"We want to assure parents that we're doing everything possible to keep their children healthy," said Dr. Stephen Keener, Medical Director for the Mecklenburg County Health Department. "Skin testing those who might have been exposed gives us the opportunity to prevent anyone else from becoming sick."
Letters are being sent home with parents of West Mecklenburg High School students informing them of the diagnosis and the upcoming skin testing.
There were 44 cases of tuberculosis diagnosed in Mecklenburg County in 2008.
Students or parents with questions concerning Tuberculosis may call CMS Director of School Health Maria Bonaiuto at 704-304-6703, or the Mecklenburg County Heath Department at 704-432-2665.
