Driver killed after running off highway, crashing into tree in Statesville

IREDELL COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A driver was killed after running off the highway and crashing into a tree in Statesville Friday afternoon.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 12:30 p.m. on I-40 West near I-77. From WBTV’s Sky3, it appeared a single-vehicle went off the right side of the roadway.

Officials say the collision occurred near exit 152.

A 2014 Honda CRV was reportedly headed west on I-40, ran off the road to the right and collided with a tree.

The driver, 57-year-old Aaron Wayne Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other passengers.

Taylor was restrained by a seatbelt and officials say there is no indication of impairment.
