Gastonia police officer suspended following accusations of assaulting a woman

GASTONIA, NC (WBTV) - A Gastonia Police Department officer is accused of assaulting a woman.

Officer Josh McSwain was arrested and suspended with pay as the investigation continues, officials said Friday. Court documents claim McSwain hit the woman in the face and nose with a vanity stool that he threw at the woman. The incident happened the day after Valentine’s Day.

It’s not clear what the relationship is between the two, but the victim in this case told WBTV’s Bria Bell over the phone that she did not want to comment as she wanted to keep things private.

McSwain was hired with the Gastonia Police Department on Jan. 22, 2018. McSwain has since bonded out of jail for the charge. This isn’t the first time, he’s been in trouble. He worked as a Cherryville police officer from September 2010 to January 2018. The police chief of Cherryville said that sometime in 2011, McSwain was suspended for three days because he violated a department policy. He did not say what policy that was.

McSwain will stay on paid leave until they wrap up an investigation into the assault.
