#TeamNOSugar: CMS teacher implements no-sugar classroom environment

Students join #TeamNoSugar

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - An entire classroom of second-graders grade at Marie G. Davis K-8 IB Candidate School is on is #TeamNOsugar!!

I discovered this Monday morning when I went to the school to kick-off it’s “One Book, One School” campaign by reading to students.

As I walked down the hallway to leave, I heard a voice whisper loudly, “TeamNOSugar!”

I turned around and saw Tamiko Greenlee, one of the second-grade teachers. She then informed me her class was on #TeamNOSugar and said, “Monday through Thursday, they don’t eat [added or processed] sugar. Only on Fridays are they allowed [to indulge].”

I was floored and Greenlee added, “I follow you on Facebook and decided to have my students do it once I learned about the effects sugar has on the brain.”

(Hello, brain fog and the fact that sugar is more addictive than cocaine! Don’t believe me — google it.)

She also said the parents are aware and she lets them know at the beginning of the school year not to send treats or money for treats unless it’s on Fridays. Greenlee also said the cafeteria staff knows too. “They were not happy in the beginning,” she recalled. “They said, ‘you’re messing up our sales’!”

Greenlee forged ahead, unfazed by their reaction. She also told me it’s her second year having a sugar-free classroom environment!

I just had to give Ms. Greenlee and her class a shout out Monday afternoon on #Firstat4. You can see that video above.

BUT - I also shot a video of two of her students explaining why they like TeamNOSugar and posted it to my Facebook page. You can see that video here.

A HUGE thank you to Ms. Greenlee for leading the charge to encourage and inspire our children to lead healthier lives!

Now if second graders can do it, so can you!

Remember, it’s never too late to join the movement and change your life!
