First Alert this evening through Wednesday

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Rain has mixed with sleet off and on throughout the day. Temperatures have struggled in the upper 30s to low 40s most of the afternoon. As we move into the evening, we will continue to see that. For that reason, a First Alert has been issued.

As we move through the night, temperatures will get colder. For many of us, we will stay just far enough above freezing that we will see just rain with a little sleet mixing in. In the mountains, there is a bigger concern. We could see a little snow this evening. Accumulation potential is 1-3” of sleet or snow.

Tuesday afternoon weather

The worst news is that you could also pick up 0.25” of freezing rain. That could accumulate on trees and power lines and start to bring them down. Power outages are a possibility. For the foothills, you could possibly pick up 0.10” of freezing rain. That isn’t as bad as the mountains but obviously, it could still cause problems tonight and tomorrow morning.

Wednesday is another First Alert. The mountains and foothills could still see winter precipitation to start the day. By lunchtime, it should all be back to rain for everyone. Either way, it is looking like another cold and wet day.

The rest of the week looks warmer but just warm enough to keep us above freezing and to keep the precipitation as all rain. (Not to actually feel nice.) We remain unsettled through the rest of the week and into the weekend. A cold front will finally move in on Sunday and dry us out by Monday.

Be safe out there!
