Streets close ahead of All-Star events in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The area near the Spectrum Center is now locked down. If you want to get around - you’re going to have to walk.

The roads closed Thursday night so most vehicles won’t be allowed near the Spectrum Center or EpiCentre. The NBA ordered concrete barriers for the road closures.

With NBA All-Star weekend comes lots of parties. There’s a heavy police presence with CMPD officers on foot and every other mode of transportation. Police are also working on duty and off duty at events. Officers are asking people to travel in groups and in well lit areas to avoid being victimized.

It’s not just CMPD out among the crowd making sure people are behaving.

Agents with Mecklenburg County ABC Board Law Enforcement Division say they’re especially watching out for illegal parties. They say they have a list of at least 20 that they’re keeping an eye on. Agents say they also want to make sure alcohol consumption doesn’t lead to fights and violence.

“We want to make sure we’re not running into those issues but also at the time being sensitive to the fact we don’t want to see any sexual assaults that are taking place out here as well,” said Sgt. Tony Chesser. “Not that we know for a fact that people are coming in specifically for this on the adult industry but we want to make sure everybody is safe at the same time as well.
