CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office has agreed to no longer charge juveniles in custody any fees for using phones at the county jail.

GTL, the telecom provider for the jail, has previously charged all inmates a fee to use the phone in order to communicate with legal counsel, family members and others.

Young people in the jail will no longer have to deal with the burden of these mounting costs which the Sheriff’s Office recognized as a means of, ‘undermining family units and community ties.’

Sheriff Garry McFadden continues to work with the MCSO staff to review current policies and make changes as they see fit in order to best care for the safety of inmates who are in their custody.
