LANDIS, NC (WBTV) - The mayor of Landis, rocked by an SBI investigation into allegations of embezzlement and the sudden resignations of top officials, is asking for patience and prayer. News of the SBI investigation into the finances of the town of Landis broke last week.
“They’re heartbroken and upset, just by allegations," said Mayor Mike Mahaley, discussing how town employees are feeling about the investigation.
Mayor Mahaley says workers in the town of Landis are upset over the allegations that money may have been embezzled from the town. That’s what the SBI is looking into, after an investigation initiated by Landis Police.
“A lot of unfounded allegations going around, some of them probably not, but we just don’t know," Mahaley added.
Minutes before WBTV spoke to the mayor, he presided over a short emergency meeting. The board voted to name police chief Kenny Isenhour as the interim town manager, replacing longtime manager and former fire chief Reed Linn.
Linn, and the town’s finance office Ginger Gibson, resigned last week when news of the investigation broke.
“You have a board, you have employees dedicated to getting to the bottom of this." Mahaley pledged.
Mahaley is hopeful residents will let the process work and be patient.
“I think right now we just need everybody to pray for us," Mahaley added. “I think that will help us probably, I know that will help us as much as anything they can do.…give us a chance, and keep your rumors to yourself.”
