ALERT: Callers pretending to be deputies in jury duty scam in Catawba County
According to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, deputies have received several reports from citizens that they have received calls from someone identifying themselves as a deputy.

CATAWBA COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Deputies are alerting the public to a scam where callers are pretending to be deputies claiming a citizen has missed jury duty to extort money.

According to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, deputies have received several reports from citizens that they have received calls from someone identifying themselves as a deputy.

The caller says the citizen has missed jury duty and have a warrant out for their arrest.

These callers use actual names of current deputies and the numbers even appear as numbers from the sheriff’s office.

The scammer then provides the citizen’s name, address and birthdate, and tell the the citizens that they must send money to avoid being arrested.

Deputies say this is a scam and citizens should not give out any personal information or transfer/send money.

Law enforcement/Clerk of Court/District Attorney/government agencies will not ask for personal information or money over the phone.

Officials say there are several apps that make it possible to look like the call is coming from a different number.
