Spike in flu cases forces visitor restrictions at Iredell hospital

Hospital issues voter restrictions

IREDELL COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Iredell Memorial Hospital is restricting children under 17 from visiting the hospital following recent flu cases.

Iredell Memorial Hospital says more than 50 influenza cases have been reported at the hospital in the past six days. Children 17 and under are asked to only visit the hospital if they are receiving medical attention.

The restriction goes into effect Friday, Feb. 8.

Health officials ask anyone with a cough, cold, fever or sore throat to avoid visiting hospital patients.

“Restrictions like this are necessary to help protect our patients as well as our staff and visitors,” said Pam Gill, Director of Infection Prevention for Iredell Health System. “We also encourage all visitors to use the masks, hand sanitizer and tissues available at public entrances of Iredell Memorial.”

Health officials say although the flu season is well underway, it’s still not too late to get vaccinated. “Evidence shows that the flu shot is the best tool we have to slow and prevent the spread of the virus,” Gill says.
