HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - A man was charged and another man was killed in a car crash Wednesday morning after the vehicle went into a creek.
A 2006 Chevrolet car crossed the center line on Kool Park Road around 5:15 a.m. and ran off the left side of the road. The car then overturned into Snow Creek after hitting an embankment, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The driver, 19-year-old Luis Javier Chavez II, was able to crawl out of the car and go to a nearby home for help. He was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, officials say.
The passenger, Martin Santillan, was pronounced dead on the scene as a result of the collision. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, officials say.
Chavez says he lost control after attempting to avoid a vehicle that traveled into his lane.
On Sunday, Feb. 10, officials say Chavez was charged with driving while license revoked, reckless driving, and misdemeanor death by vehicle.
Officials say the speed limit in that area of Kook Park Road is 45 mph. The estimated speeds of the vehicle were 65 mph as original traveling speed and 60 mph at impact.
