Man dies after interstate crash in Huntersville

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A man who was rushed to the hospital after a crash on I-77 in Huntersville Wednesday afternoon later died, according to troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The wreck happened before 3:30 p.m. on I-77 near Gilead Road, which is Exit 23. Huntersville firefighters said the driver - identified Thursday as 27-year-old Michael Andrew Zitnik - was trapped in a vehicle after that vehicle struck a pole.

Troopers say Zitnik was going north on I-77 in a 2001 Subaru Legacy when he struck several lane dividers and crossed into the closed toll lanes that are under construction. The vehicle then ran off the road into the left median, struck a ditch and a pile rocks before striking an overhead sign support.

Zitnik was taken to Atrium Health where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.

Troopers have said what may have led to the crash, but confirmed Thursday that impairment is suspected.

While crews worked at the scene, firefighters asked drivers to use caution in the area.

No further information has been released.
