CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Detectives from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department need the public’s help in identifying the people at the scene of a shooting in South End Charlotte.
The incident happened in the early morning hours of December 20, 2018. The situation was captured on surveillance video recorded at a nearby business. A group of people can be seen congregating in the parking lot directly across from the Apostrophe Lounge on South Tryon Street. Police think the people involved in the situation were in the club prior to the shooting.
“We don’t know if this started inside the nightclub or if it’s something that happened afterwards,” said CMPD Detective Brandon Miller with the Charlotte Crime Stoppers.
The video shows a black car pull up to the group of people in the parking lot. A man gets out of the car and approaches the group. Tensions rise.
“At some point it does escalate very quickly to the point where one person does pull out a gun and shoot our victim in the leg,” said Miller.
From the video, it isn’t clear exactly who fires the shot but the crowd jumps back in unison. The man who was shot starts staggering away.
Miller said this type of activity is not the norm for South End.
“We typically don’t see too many shootings or any type of violent crime in that area itself which again is quite surprising to us,” explained the detective.
The video shows one person hop out of a nearby vehicle after the initial shooting and steal the car of the man who was shot.
“So not only do we have this person going around, knowing that they shot someone, but also driving the person’s vehicle that they just shot,” said Miller.
The detective said it is rare that a shooting is captured on surveillance video. He said the car that was stolen was a black 2011 Chevy Impala with the plate number FLD-2390.
Miller noted that detectives are trying to identify the people who were involved in the incident.
