UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A person was violently stabbed multiple times by a friend while sitting in a vehicle in Union County Thursday night.
Deputies say they are working to determine why the suspect attacked his 19-year-old friend outside of a home in the Silver Creek neighborhood near Wesley Chapel.
Officials arrived at the home on Deep Hollow Court around 9:30 p.m. and found the victim with stab wounds to the neck, face and chest, according to a release from the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
“Very bizarre, when you look at what took place,” said Tony Underwood with the Union County Sheriff’s Office. “It was a very bloody scene as you can imagine someone who is cut and stabbed that many times.”
Deputies say the found the victim inside the home while family members attempted to control his bleeding. Before being transported to the hospital, he told deputies that his friend, Dylan Vanderschel stabbed him, officials say. Despite being stabbed, the victim was treated and released from the hospital.
WBTV spoke with the victim’s mother briefly on Friday. She said her son is recovering and resting and was grateful he survived.
Deputies located an address for Vanderschel in Matthews and determined he was not there. While still at the house, Vanderschel’s older brother called 911 and said he was driving the suspect home, officials say.
“The brother of the suspect called 911 to report that he had his brother and was bringing him home to meet with officers,” said Underwood.
A short time later, the suspect and his brother arrived and deputies detained Vanderschel. Officials say they saw blood on Vanderschel’s hands and the passenger area of the car he was riding in. Both Vanderschel and his brother went to the sheriff’s office where they further spoke with detectives.
“Without knowing what that reason would be, it is really hard to put a finger on one thing,” said Underwood. "We are very thankful that he survived.
Vanderschel was arrested and charged with assault with deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. No charges have filed against the brother.
