One dead after tree falls on car in Matthews

MATTHEWS, NC (WBTV) - One person was confirmed dead after a tree fell on a vehicle in Matthews Sunday afternoon.

According to the Matthews Police Department, the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. on E John Street at Charles Buckley Way.

Officers responded to the area in reference to a report of a tree that had fallen onto a vehicle and determined that the vehicle was headed east on E. John St. when a tree fell on the car just before the intersection of Charles Buckley Way.

After being struck by the tree, the driver pressed the accelerator on the car which went through the front lawn of the Matthews Church of God in the 500 block of E. John Street.

The car hit the front of the church, causing minor structural damage, then came to a final stop in a next door residential yard.

Police say the driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead on the scene by Medic.

Paul Green Ladd, Jr., 61, of Indian Trail was later identified as the driver of the car.

A passenger of this vehicle was transported by Medic to CMC Main with minor injuries.

E. John St. was temporarily closed but has reopened. Icy roads posed an issue for many drivers, with dozens of traffic accident calls.

No names have been released.
